“Educational Communications and Technology:
Research and Publication”
Research and publication is of paramount importance to academics and higher education. To keep active in the research community, researchers are engaged in various activities, in addition to teaching, for example, being an independent peer reviewer to support and keep quality research work; being an organizer and/or a participant in international conferences to set stage for sharing and exchanges; organizing and attending seminars to keep track of the continuously changing research process and trends. The 2014 Annual Meeting of the Hong Kong Association for Educational Communications and Technology (HKAECT) sets the stage for a discussion forum on the issues of the research and publication. The forum will begin with a sharing of research and publication on “Research and publication: Getting started,” then be followed by an overview of the statistical tools on “An overview of quantitative methods: Recent development of statistical tools.”

Title: “Research and publication: Getting started”
Dr. Jae PARK (Assistant Professor, Hong Kong Institute of Education)
Dr. Lisa DENG (Research Assistant Professor, Hong Kong Baptist University)
Today’s academics get higher recognition through research than teaching or community projection. Thus, their publication list is consistently given more weight than any other items in the CV. “Publish or perish”, no matter you like it or not, has become more or less a rule of survival in academic world. In this presentation, Dr. Lisa Deng and Dr Jae Park, both early career academics, will share their experience in research and publication.
Based on the experience of her own and other research students, Dr. Lisa Deng will focus on several challenging aspects of doing research such as coming up with a good research question, conducting literature review, managing bibliography and writing. She will also share her experience and strategies of getting things published such as choosing journals, dealing with editors and negative reviews. Dr. Jae Park will explore the problem of dichotomy between research and publication as a liability for our academic career. He will share his experience and strategies in academic publication such as where to start; how he got interested in some research problems; writing design and plan; the ‘usual’ dilemma of theory versus practice; ‘negotiation’ with publishers; and, rejection-resubmission.
Dr. Jae PARK (Assistant Professor, Hong Kong Institute of Education)
Dr. Lisa DENG (Research Assistant Professor, Hong Kong Baptist University)

Title: “An overview of quantitative methods: Recent development of statistical tools”
Dr. Wilfred LAU (Postdoctoral Fellow, University of Hong Kong)
Dr. Alex CHAN (Assistant Professor, Hong Kong Shue Yan University)
In this workshop, Dr. Wilfred Lau and Dr. Alex Chan will provide a brief overview of several statistical techniques that have been widely adopted in social science research: 1) Multi-level modeling (hierarchical linear modeling), 2) longitudinal data analysis, 3) structural equation modeling, and 4) latent class analysis. The presenters will discuss the logic and principles of applying these statistical techniques, highlight some key research questions that can be addressed by these quantitative tools, and provide illustrations from various disciplines (e.g. education, psychology, technology and communication).
Dr. Alex CHAN (Assistant Professor, Hong Kong Shue Yan University)
Dr. Wilfred LAU (Postdoctoral Fellow, University of Hong Kong)
